How we know this: read on 21 September 2026 — Sea Turtle, Inc.’s home page for the new hospital, its Meet Our Team page for Dr. Amy Bonka, its Sea Turtle Releases & Nesting Season page (including the published 2026 nesting calendar, which we counted), its Cold Stun page, and its In The News index; plus Padre Island National Seashore’s sea turtle and hatchling-release pages at nps.gov/pais. Left out, because no source we could reach supports them: that the 2026 season was a record; the 400-square-foot treatment room used since 1999; the 12,000 turtles said to have been cold-stunned in the February 2021 freeze; a patient capacity rising from 25 to over 100; an on-site CT scanner and a three-hour transport to McAllen; a count of 150 clutches, 14,000 eggs or 96 Kemp’s ridley nests between Boca Chica and the Port Mansfield East Cut; the USACE hopper dredge McFarland and its nearshore berm (usace.army.mil refuses automated requests, so we treat it as unread); and a $6.4M dune-restoration figure.
A new hospital opens on Padre Blvd
Sea Turtle, Inc. has opened the new Sea Turtle Hospital at its South Padre Island campus. The organisation says the facility spans over 15,000 square feet and describes it as the largest enclosed sea turtle hospital in the world, calling it a milestone in its mission to advance sea turtle recovery, education and conservation.
Beyond the square footage and that description, Sea Turtle, Inc. has not published the operational detail an early draft of this story carried — the size of the room the new hospital replaces, how many patients it can now hold at once, or what diagnostic equipment is installed. We have left all of that out rather than guess at it, and will add it when the organisation publishes it.
Who is running the conservation side
The organisation’s conservation and rehabilitation work is led by Amy Bonka, Ph.D., its Chief Conservation Officer — and, per her own biography on the Sea Turtle, Inc. site, the first person to hold that post there.
What the 2026 nesting calendar actually shows
Sea Turtle, Inc. publishes a running nesting calendar for each season, one row per nest, listing the date laid, the number of eggs, an estimated hatch window, the actual hatch date and the number of hatchlings released. The 2026 season officially opened on 1 April.
Counting the published 2026 table on 21 September, it holds 282 nest rows, numbered through nest 283, the first laid on 13 April and the last on 26 August. Adding up the table’s own per-nest columns gives roughly 25,800 eggs laid and about 19,300 hatchlings released — those two totals are our arithmetic on the organisation’s published figures, not numbers Sea Turtle, Inc. states itself. The table does not break nests down by species, and it does not say which stretch of coast the patrols cover, so we cannot report a Kemp’s ridley (Lepidochelys kempii) count or a geographic span.
Nor can we call the season a record. A record needs a comparison against previous years, and neither Sea Turtle, Inc. nor Padre Island National Seashore publishes prior-season totals that we could read. The only record-shaped item we found was a third-party headline reproduced on Sea Turtle, Inc.’s In The News index — “Sea Turtle Inc. hopes for third-record breaking nesting season in Texas” — which is a hope from an earlier year, not a result for 2026.
Cold stun, the reason a bigger building matters
Sea Turtle, Inc. does explain the mechanism that drives its biggest intake events. When water temperatures drop, turtles become cold-stunned and, if not rescued in time, can drown because they cannot lift their heads to breathe. Rescued animals are brought back to the facility, warmed slowly and safely, and released once water temperatures stabilise. The organisation does not publish a casualty count for any particular freeze on that page, so the specific 2021 figure an earlier draft carried is not repeated here.
