Every road trip ends at the causeway
South Padre Island's road connection is the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway between Port Isabel and the island. TxDOT says FM 510, SH 100 and SH 48 feed traffic toward the bridge; the final approach through Port Isabel is on SH 100. A proposed second access is still in environmental study, so it is not a route you can use today.
Before a road arrival or departure, open DriveTexas and look for the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway, SH 100 and any highway you will use to reach Port Isabel. Double-check that the lodging or attraction address says South Padre Island, not another part of Padre Island farther north. The visitor maps help place the causeway, Padre Boulevard, the Gulf beach and the Laguna Madre side before you arrive.
Flying still requires a trip from the airport
There is no commercial passenger airport on South Padre Island. The three regional choices are:
- Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport (BRO) in Brownsville
- Valley International Airport (HRL) in Harlingen
- McAllen International Airport (MFE) in McAllen
Choose the flight and the island transfer together. A cheaper or more direct flight can still be awkward if it lands after a shuttle or public-transit connection you intended to use. The airports guide compares the current ground options each airport actually publishes.
BRO publishes a public-transit option using Valley Metro and Island Metro, with a transfer at Las Palmas Shopping Center in Port Isabel. This is a multi-leg trip, not an Island Metro bus waiting outside the terminal. HRL lists South Padre Island shuttle providers, taxis and rental cars. MFE lists taxis outside baggage claim, transportation services and rental cars, but its current ground-transportation pages do not publish a comparable public-transit itinerary to the island.
For a private shuttle, taxi or rental car, reserve with the provider and use its pickup instructions. Airport and visitor-bureau lists help you find names; the company controls whether it serves your flight, what it charges and where you meet the driver.
Decide whether the car stays with you
A car is useful for mainland errands, a county beach entrance, bulky beach equipment or stops spread across the region. It also means working out lodging and destination parking. If most of your plans follow the island's main corridor, you may be able to combine walking, Island Metro and a reserved ride instead.
Read getting around before paying for a rental car for the entire stay. If you are bringing a trailer, several vehicles or an oversized vehicle, settle the lodging space first and use the parking guide for city beach and county-access differences.
Keep the return trip connected
For a flight home, work backward from the airport's current check-in guidance and your confirmed ride. The bridge is part of every road-based airport transfer, including a shuttle or taxi. Recheck the flight, provider pickup and DriveTexas before leaving the island rather than relying on the traffic you saw when you arrived.
