The causeway is the island's only road connection
TxDOT identifies the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway as the only roadway between South Padre Island and the mainland. Its second-access project is an environmental study of possible future connections, not another bridge available to drivers today.
That means a crash, closure, weather problem or special-event lane plan on the causeway can affect private cars, taxis, shuttles and Island Metro at the same time. There is no alternate road around the lagoon.
Check the road that exists now
Open DriveTexas shortly before leaving and look at the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway and SH 100 through Port Isabel. TxDOT says the service includes current traffic, construction, crashes, closures, weather effects, road damage and available camera feeds.
A camera is only one view at one moment. Check the incident and closure layers as well, and note the direction of travel. A clear eastbound image does not describe westbound traffic later in the day.
For a flight, charter, event or other fixed meeting time, make the decision from the current road picture and the provider's cutoff—not a universal “bridge buffer.” On the return trip, check again before leaving the island.
Events can change the normal pattern
Runs, parades and other announced events sometimes use temporary lane controls on or near the causeway and Padre Boulevard. Those plans belong to a specific date. Check the organizer and the City's current news when an island event overlaps your drive, then use DriveTexas for the road itself.
Once you cross onto the island, local traffic can continue along Padre Boulevard even when the bridge is moving. Use the visitor maps to find the correct turn and the parking guide before arriving at a beach or event lot.
If traffic changes while you are traveling
Follow police, TxDOT and posted traffic direction. If an official closure affects a reservation or airport ride, contact the operator with the actual status and wait for official reopening or routing information.
