Where migration meets the coast
South Padre Island sits at the edge of the Central Flyway and receives birds arriving across the Gulf. The experience changes with wind, fronts, rainfall and season: spring can concentrate exhausted landbirds in tiny patches of cover, while winter belongs to the Laguna Madre's waterfowl and shorebirds.
Start with habitat
Use the place guides to choose among native gardens, boardwalk marsh, open flats, north-end beach and the jetties. A sighting is never guaranteed; the weather and the birds set the schedule.
