Beach, bay, jetty, or boat?

Want to fish while you're on South Padre? You can cast from the beach, explore the bay with a guide, or head offshore on a charter. The jetties are another option, but the exposed rocks call for more care. Here's how the choices compare.

  • Fish the beach for a flexible land-based outing. You will need room to cast without putting swimmers or other beach users in the line. Wind, waves, current, lightning, and a busy beach can all shorten the session. Start with the Gulf surf guide and the NWS beach forecast.
  • Fish the jetties for access to moving water from shore. The tradeoff is exposed rock, current, swell, boat traffic, and a longer gear carry. Read the Brazos Santiago jetties guide before heading out.
  • Fish the Lower Laguna Madre for a bay outing. The water may be less exposed than the Gulf, but wind, shallow water, navigation, boat lanes, and the trip back still matter. The Lower Laguna Madre guide compares the practical choices.
  • Book or launch a boat for bay, nearshore, or offshore water. Ask how far the trip runs, how much time is spent fishing, what the vessel provides, and what happens if the weather changes. Start with the nearshore and offshore guide or how to choose a charter.

Bring gear for that kind of day

A beach setup needs a clear casting area and hooks that stay contained. On the jetties, carry only what you can manage while keeping your hands free on the rocks. Wading and kayaking require a clear route back as wind and water change. A charter may provide tackle, bait, ice, or fish cleaning, but those details vary by operator.

The fishing methods guides cover wading, kayaking, charters, beginner outings, bait and lures, and fish handling. Whichever method you choose, keep pliers and hook-removal tools ready, bring drinking water and sun protection, and know how you will identify and care for a fish before keeping it.

Check the day, not just the season

Spring, summer, fall, and winter change the heat, wind, fronts, and comfort of a trip. The season guides explain those patterns without promising a catch. For the day itself, use the NWS beach forecast for surf and jetty plans or the NWS marine forecast for bay and boat plans.

Texas license, size, bag, season, and gear rules can change. Open TPWD's current fishing regulations before fishing and again before keeping a catch.

Keep exploring

Browse fishing by place, method, season, or species. If you want to stay on land, compare surf fishing with pier and jetty fishing. The licenses and regulations guide explains which official pages to have open before the first cast.

  • TPWD's saltwater-and-freshwater release guidance says to land fish promptly, keep release tools ready, minimize time out of water, leave fish in the water when possible, and wet hands or a glove before handling.
