You don't need the same gear for every fishing trip. A rod on the beach, a wade in the bay, a kayak and a guided boat each come with a different packing list. Start with the outing you want, then see what you'll need.
Compare the choices
- Wade fishing starts with the bottom, depth, boat traffic, wind, and the route back to shore.
- Kayak fishing adds a launch site, flotation, communication, navigation, and the effect of wind on the return trip.
- Charter fishing provides a captain and vessel, but requires clear booking, weather, cancellation, and included-service terms.
- Family and beginner fishing works best as a short first session with simple gear and an easy stopping point.
- Bait and lures narrows the shopping list after you know the water, method, and current gear rules.
- Catch and release and cleaning and cooking a catch help you prepare for fish handling before anything is landed.
Let the weather change the method
Wind, surf, water clarity, crowding, heat, and thunderstorms can make yesterday's technique a poor choice today. Use the weather, wind, and tides guide with the current NWS beach forecast or NWS marine forecast. If the water is not suitable, switch methods or save fishing for another time.
