Make the paddle home the easier half
A kayak can reach quiet, shallow water, but it gives you little shelter from wind, sun, or boat wakes. Choose a stable sit-on-top, pedal, or paddle setup you can handle. Wear a fitted life jacket, carry a visibility flag and a way to communicate, and know how you'll release the anchor quickly.
A short crossing can get hard fast
The afternoon sea breeze or a thunderstorm can turn an easy morning route into a difficult return. Tell someone where you're going, secure your tools, and save enough time and energy to turn back early. If your experience and the forecast don't leave much room for error, choose a guide or fish from shore instead.
