Get your release tools ready before you cast
Keep pliers where you can reach them, decide how you'll land the fish, and use tackle strong enough to avoid an exhausted fight. Your hook choice and photo plan also affect how long the fish stays out of the water.
Handle the fish as little as possible
Wet your hands or use a rubberized net when that's appropriate. Support the fish, keep its gills in the water, and make any photo quick. Warm water, deep capture, a protected species, or a fish in poor condition may call for faster or specialized handling. Deep reef fish may need descending equipment when it's required or appropriate.
Identify the fish before deciding whether to keep it, and check the current Texas fishing regulations. Review the species guides before the trip so the first look doesn't happen with a fish on the line.
