Use TPWD for today's rules
South Padre fishing can involve beach, bay, pass, nearshore, or offshore water. TPWD says a fishing license and the appropriate endorsement are generally required to fish public Texas waters unless an exemption applies, and coastal saltwater has its own endorsement requirements.
Open TPWD's current fishing-license information and general fishing regulations for the day and water you plan to fish.
Before the first cast
- Make sure each angler has the required license and endorsement or qualifies for a listed exemption.
- Know which water the trip will enter and whether additional state or federal rules apply.
- Look up identification, length, bag, season, gear, bait, and protected-species rules for the fish and water.
- On a charter, ask the operator how licenses are handled and what remains each angler's responsibility.
Size limits, bag limits, closures, and seasons can change, so an old photo or trip report is not a rule source. Follow any additional restrictions posted at the access point.
Before keeping a fish
Identify the fish and verify the rule before dispatching it. If you are unsure about the species, legality, condition, or ability to keep it cold, release it with the right tools ready.
