What each season changes
The time of year affects heat, wind, fronts, water temperature, daylight, and how comfortable different outings may be. It does not guarantee a bite or tell you whether a fish is legal to keep.
- Spring can bring fronts and changing wind, so keep both Gulf and bay possibilities in mind.
- Summer makes heat, sun, thunderstorms, drinking water, and keeping a catch cold especially important.
- Fall can shift quickly as fronts arrive; compare exposed water with a more protected setting.
- Winter puts extra emphasis on wind, cold-water conditions, warm clothing, and a straightforward trip back.
Use the forecast for the water you chose
For surf and jetty fishing, read the NWS beach forecast. For bay, nearshore, or offshore plans, read the NWS marine forecast. Posted instructions and the conditions you find at the access point still matter.
Check fishing rules separately
Seasonal activity and legal fishing seasons are different things. Current closures, size limits, bag limits, and applicable waters are listed in TPWD's fishing regulations. After checking the calendar, compare places and methods for the actual outing.
