Use the [live bus map](#live-buses) to choose a route, find a stop and see the operator's next arrival estimates. Select a bus for its latest reported location. The map refreshes automatically while the page is visible; you can pause or refresh it yourself. If the feed is unavailable, the official Island Metro tracker remains available.
What Island Metro connects
Island Metro is the City of South Padre Island's fare-free bus service. The City describes it as a deviated fixed-route system serving South Padre Island and Port Isabel. For an ordinary visitor trip, begin with the published stops; travelers who need a disability-related modification can request one from the operator.
The operator's live tracker lists four public routes. Routes 1 and 2 link the island and Port Isabel in different stop orders; Route 3 serves Port Isabel and Laguna Heights; Route 4 loops around the island. Choose the route and direction that match both your destination and return ride.
The Island Metro route map and schedule is useful for planning the two main corridors:
- The island route starts at the Multi Modal Transfer Station/Visitors Center and names the Isla Blanca and Beach Park entrances, Tompkins Park, Convention Centre entrance, Birding Center entrance, Sea Turtle, Inc. and return-side stops across from several Gulf Boulevard beach accesses.
- The Port Isabel/Laguna Heights route crosses the causeway and names the Port Isabel museum, Las Palmas Shopping Center, H-E-B, Walmart and stops in Laguna Heights.
Route names, times and stop order can change. Use the City's Public Transit page to open the current material rather than saving a screenshot of the timetable.
At the stop
The route sheet warns that riders need to be on the correct side of the road. A stop across Padre or Gulf Boulevard may serve the return direction, so check the route direction before the bus arrives.
The operator's TransLoc map shows vehicle locations and estimated arrivals. It is useful for deciding when to leave the room or beach, but an estimate can move with traffic or a disruption. The route sheet also says its published frequency is approximate.
If you have not ridden the route before, choose the named stop closest to your destination and look at the final walk. A “beach access” stop may still leave a road crossing and loose-sand walkover. Use the beach access map for the beach end of the trip.
Bags, boards, strollers and bicycles
Island Metro's bus policies allow hand baggage that can be carried or stowed under a seat. Walkers, carriages and strollers must be folded and kept clear of the aisle and the driver's view. Surfboards and other beach gear are allowed only if room permits and you can hold them without blocking the aisle or view. Fishing poles need hooks secured or removed.
Bicycles normally ride on the exterior rack. The policy allows a bicycle inside only when the rack is full, broken or unavailable. A heavily loaded beach group should have another plan rather than assuming everything will board.
Accessibility
The current route sheet says reasonable ADA modifications are available on request. The City's transit page lists the operator contact and facility at 321 Padre Boulevard. Ask about the particular boarding, securement or route-deviation need, then consider the sidewalk and entrance at the destination separately. Continue with accessible travel if the path after the bus stop matters.
Connecting from Brownsville airport
Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport describes a public-transit trip using Valley Metro and Island Metro, with the transfer at Las Palmas Shopping Center in Port Isabel.
