- Homeschool Highlights: The zoo is known for its successes in breeding endangered species, and its conservation projects include Western lowland gorillas and the Kemp's ridley, the most endangered of the world's seven sea turtles: since 1981 the zoo has run the U.S. field side of the joint U.S./Mexico program that protects Kemp's ridley nests on their nesting beaches in Tamaulipas, Mexico. The zoo is also a botanical park with about 225 plant species, and it describes its South Texas Botanical Exhibit & Park as a playground and botanical garden dedicated to the plants and animals of south Texas, with walking trails lined with native plants, a natural fit for a botany lesson.
- Interactive Encounters: public giraffe feeding at the Giraffe Landing platform on weekends (groups can arrange feeding encounters through the zoo's Education Department, (956) 548-WILD), the Stingray Touch Tank in the Russell Aquatic Ecology Center, and the air-conditioned Herpetarium, where kids can try to tell a venomous coral snake from a harmless Mexican milksnake alongside a giant reticulated python, Gila monsters, tortoises and rare crocodilians.
