Dogs on South Padre Island: Leash Law, Beaches & City Parks

How we know this: Tompkins Park’s address, dedication year and the Parks & Recreation number were confirmed on myspi.org on 2026-09-21. Claims we could not confirm (park hours, acreage, an off-leash park in Laguna Vista) were left out.

Island Pet Regulations & Play Areas

South Padre Island has no dog park yet; an off-leash "SPI Dog Park" is listed in the City's 2025-2029 Capital Improvement Plan with no start date.

South Padre Island is easy with dogs. Stay off the dunes and away from nesting birds and turtles, and keep to these basics:

  • John L. Tompkins Park: The city park at 6100 Padre Blvd, dedicated in 2016 and run by SPI Parks & Recreation, (956) 761-8168. Dogs are welcome on a leash.
  • Beach & leash: Dogs are a common sight on the Gulf beach. Keep yours on a leash, carry bags and clean up. The city’s animal-control page at myspi.org has the current rules.
