Dolphin Watch & Eco-Tours on the Laguna Madre

How we know this: departure point, phone, tour times and the net-drag format were checked on theoriginaldolphinwatch.com and its booking calendar on 2026-09-23. Other operators run similar trips from the same marina.

  • Sailing times (from the operator’s booking calendar, checked 2026-09-23): Dolphin Watch Eco Tour 11:00 AM–12:30 PM and 1:30–3:00 PM; Sunset Dolphin Watch 6:00–7:30 PM through October 8, then 5:30–7:00 PM on most days from October 9. Times shift with the season.

Overview

Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are found in the Laguna Madre year-round, mostly along its deeper channels and passes such as the Brazos Santiago Pass. Tour boats leave Sea Ranch Marina, and dolphins are regularly seen feeding, playing and riding the boat’s wake, sometimes with calves; sightings are common but not guaranteed.

The Educational Eco-Tour Net Drag

Unlike standard sightseeing boats, classic island eco-tours drag a small net along the bottom of the bay. After dragging the net along the bay floor, the crew pulls it aboard and empties the catch into an on-board saltwater tank (The Original Dolphin Watch calls it a “living salt water laboratory”).

  • Live Specimen Identification: Guides walk passengers through what came up — crabs, shrimp, small fish and other bay life — before everything goes back in the water.

Practical Tips for Families

  • Pack a light jacket: the breeze on the water can feel cool, especially on the sunset run.
  • Bring your own drinks and snacks if you like: The Original Dolphin Watch welcomes BYOB but asks for no glass containers.
  • Pick the 11:00 AM morning run, when the water is often calmer, or the sunset run to see dolphins and the sun setting over the Laguna Madre.
