No tropical system is threatening the western Gulf this weekend

The National Hurricane Center's 18 September outlook puts the only Atlantic area it is watching several hundred miles southwest of the Azores.

The National Hurricane Center issued its Atlantic tropical weather outlook at 200 PM EDT Fri Sep 18 2026. The only area it names is in the eastern subtropical Atlantic, which it labels AL99.

The outlook describes that system as showers and thunderstorms that have changed little in organization since the morning, in association with an area of low pressure located several hundred miles southwest of the Azores. It gives formation chances of 70 percent through 48 hours and 70 percent through seven days.

Nothing in that outlook is in the Gulf. Mid-September is the busy part of the season, so that is worth saying plainly rather than leaving unsaid — and it is worth saying only with the issuance time attached, because the outlook is reissued several times a day.

If you are reading this later than the afternoon of 18 September, read the outlook itself rather than this page. The link is below and it is the same one we read.
