How we know this: read on 21 September 2026 — sandcastledays.com for the festival itself, the Convention & Visitors Bureau’s Sandcastle Trail and Sea Turtle Art Trail pages at sopadre.com, and its SpaceX page at visitsouthpadreisland.com for launch viewing. Left out, because nothing we could read supports them: that the Sandcastle Trail’s sculptures line Padre Boulevard (the CVB says they are spread throughout the island); the figure of 11 Sea Turtle Art Trail installations, which the CVB puts at 13; and every economic claim in the original draft — “tens of thousands” of launch observers, filled hotels, dining rooms and retail shops, and a transformed mid-week and shoulder season. Two Cameron County park URLs returned 404, so nothing here rests on a county source.
Sandcastle Days, in its 38th year
The City of South Padre Island, Clayton’s and founders Walter McDonald and Lucinda Wierenga — known on the island as “Amazin Walter” and “Sandy Feet” — host the 38th annual Sandcastle Days on 2–4 October 2026.
The festival is held at Clayton’s – The Biggest Beach Bar in Texas, 6900 Padre Blvd. Master sculptors from around the world compete, and the organisers describe an event that began as a local celebration and grew into a World Championship qualifying event that draws 30,000+ fans. It is free and family-friendly, with sand sculptures and live music.
The sand stays up all year: the Sandcastle Trail
The craft does not pack up when the festival does. South Padre Island is home to a collection of castles called the Sandcastle Trail — around 30 sand sculptures located throughout the island, sculpted by professional sand artists, some local and some from as far away as Singapore. Many are traditional castles; others are not.
The trail needs constant upkeep. Lucinda “Sandyfeet” Wierenga and her team have been touching up the existing sculptures; some need only minor work, like the piece outside the SPI Birding Centre, while others — such as the Semper Fi sculpture outside Island Services — need rebuilding outright.
And a second art trail, in fibreglass
Running alongside it, the Sea Turtle Art Trail is a set of 13 permanent sea turtle art sculptures across the City of South Padre Island, curated, designed and built by the South Padre Island Sea Turtle Art Trail Task Force. Each began as a blank fibreglass sea turtle form in rough factory priming, which a featured artist turned into a finished piece.
Watching a launch from Isla Blanca Park
The island’s other headline draw is across the water. The Convention & Visitors Bureau lists Isla Blanca Park as a best viewing spot for SpaceX launches — “a popular location with stunning views of the launch” — with the Boca Chica launch site just across the bay from South Padre Island. The CVB also notes that many hotels and vacation rentals offer views of launches from the balcony or beachfront, and points visitors to the island’s live webcams to check conditions before heading out.
What we cannot tell you is how many people a launch actually brings, or what it does to occupancy. No source we could read publishes crowd counts or mid-week and shoulder-season figures for South Padre Island, so this piece does not claim any. If the CVB or the county publishes them, we will link the numbers rather than estimate them.
