Recognize the plant
Beach morning-glory (Ipomoea imperati) is one of the plants recorded in the reviewed Padre Island habitat research. A ground-hugging vine with white funnel flowers, yellow throats and leaves that vary from narrow to distinctly fiddle-shaped.
Habitat on a barrier island
Open upper beach and young dunes, often close to railroad vine but visually separate when both are flowering. Presence still varies by salinity, sand movement, flooding, maintenance and season, so this profile is a field clue rather than a promise at one beach access.
Why it matters
Its low stems hold the surface while flowers support insects in a habitat with little shade or fresh water. A plant does not have to be rare to be important: roots, leaves, flowers and seed all connect moving sand or shallow water to the island food web.
Look without changing the habitat
Stay on public paths and dune walkovers, never pull or transplant a wild specimen, and keep vehicles, chairs and foot traffic out of vegetation. Photograph the whole plant, leaves, flowers or fruit and the surrounding habitat before making an identification. Seagrasses seen as beach wrack may have drifted from another part of the lagoon or Gulf.
