Queen Isabella Causeway Live Webcams, Traffic & Bridge Status

How we know this: verified from TxDOT Pharr District, Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority, and official traffic monitoring cameras as of late September 2026. The Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway is State Highway 100's sole link between Port Isabel and South Padre Island.

Causeway Specifications & Wind Advisories

The Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway spans 2.37 miles across the Laguna Madre, rising to a central vertical clearance of approximately 85 feet to allow barge and vessel traffic through the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.

  • High Wind Advisories (45+ mph): When sustained crosswinds reach 45 mph, TxDOT and the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office issue high-profile vehicle advisories, temporarily restricting RVs, travel trailers, empty tractor-trailers, and high-sided vans from crossing.
  • Severe Tropical Storm Warnings: In the event of mandatory island evacuations, bridge traffic is prioritized westbound toward mainland Port Isabel. Check our emergency updates for storm routing.
  • Pedestrian & Bicycle Prohibitions: Pedestrians and non-motorized bicycles are strictly prohibited on the causeway at all times, with the sole exception of the annual, police-escorted Ride for Rotary crossing held every October.

Peak Travel Windows: Avoiding Causeway Gridlock

Traffic flows smoothly across the 4-lane causeway most weekdays, but bottleneck delays occur during peak seasonal waves:

  1. Friday Afternoons (3:00 PM – 7:00 PM): Inbound traffic surges toward the island as weekend travelers and Valley residents cross from Highway 100.
  2. Sunday Afternoons (1:00 PM – 6:00 PM): Outbound traffic backs up as departing weekend visitors merge onto Highway 100 toward Brownsville and Harlingen.
  3. Holiday Weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day): Bridge transit times can stretch to 45–60 minutes during peak midday checkout hours. Plan early morning or late evening crossings.

Public Transit Alternative: Fare-Free Island Metro

Don’t want to drive? The Island Metro operates a clean, air-conditioned, fare-free shuttle connecting Port Isabel (including the HEB transit website builder page) across the causeway to stops throughout South Padre Island. Buses run daily from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM with live GPS tracking.

Future Second Access: The Proposed SH 104 Bridge

The Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority (CCRMA) and TxDOT Pharr District are actively progressing environmental impact studies and engineering design for State Highway 104 (the SPI 2nd Causeway). The proposed project will connect northern Laguna Vista across the bay to northern South Padre Island near Andy Bowie Park, providing vital secondary emergency access and alleviating peak seasonal congestion.
