Clapper rail (Rallus crepitans)
A secretive, chicken-sized marsh bird with a long slightly curved bill, barred flanks and a loud clattering call.
Season and local range: Year-round salt-marsh resident.

Dense salt and brackish marsh at the edge of Laguna Madre.
Where to look
Listen from the Laguna Madre Nature Trail and Nature Center boardwalk, especially when quiet conditions carry calls across the marsh. Birds may move as tides, wind, fronts, water levels and activity at the site change.
What the bird is doing
Rails usually stay inside cover. Playback and close pursuit can pull them from shelter; patient listening is the better island experience.
Watching birds
Use binoculars or a camera zoom, stay on public paths and leave feeding, resting and nesting birds enough room to continue normal behavior. If a bird stops feeding, stands alert, calls repeatedly or moves away because of you, increase the distance.
