Quick identification
Least bittern (Ixobrychus exilis)
A tiny, narrow-bodied heron with buff wings and a dark back. It climbs reeds and can freeze with its bill pointed upward.
Season and local range: Warm-season breeder in suitable marsh.

Dense freshwater and brackish reeds with open pockets for feeding.
Where to look
The Laguna Madre Nature Trail and Nature Center marsh are the island's practical viewing locations; early quiet hours are best for hearing calls. Birds may move as tides, wind, fronts, water levels and activity at the site change.
What the bird is doing
Bitterns nest low in marsh vegetation. Remain on boardwalks, avoid playback near suspected nests and accept that a heard bird may be the whole encounter.
Watching birds
Use binoculars or a camera zoom, stay on public paths and leave feeding, resting and nesting birds enough room to continue normal behavior. If a bird stops feeding, stands alert, calls repeatedly or moves away because of you, increase the distance.
