Quick identification
American herring gull (Larus smithsonianus) is a Uncommon to regular winter visitor around South Padre and the Lower Laguna Madre. A large pale-backed gull with pink legs and a heavy yellow bill in adulthood. Immatures take several years to move from mottled brown to adult plumage.

Gulf beach, passes, jetties and mixed gull roosts.
Where to look
Study larger gulls at Isla Blanca and along the winter beach. Photographs from multiple angles help with difficult immature identification. Sightings are possibilities rather than appointments; tide, wind, fronts, water level and human activity can change what uses a site.
What the bird is doing
Identification is often harder than finding the bird. Treat uncertain large gulls as a study opportunity rather than forcing a rare-name conclusion.
Watch without changing the scene
Use binoculars or a camera zoom, stay on public paths and leave feeding, resting and nesting birds enough room to continue normal behavior. If a bird stops feeding, stands alert, calls repeatedly or moves away because of you, increase the distance.
