Quick identification
Aplomado falcon (Falco femoralis) is a Resident in nearby mainland coastal prairie; not an island guarantee around South Padre and the Lower Laguna Madre. A long-tailed falcon with bold facial stripes, dark upperparts and a contrasting pale chest above a dark belly band.

Open coastal prairie, savanna and tidal grassland on the mainland.
Where to look
Use official routes at Laguna Atascosa, Bahia Grande and Old Port Isabel Road. The island is a planning base, but the core habitat is nearby rather than town beach. Sightings are possibilities rather than appointments; tide, wind, fronts, water level and human activity can change what uses a site.
What the bird is doing
This recovering falcon is best viewed from public roads and refuge routes. Never approach nest structures or leave a roadway where access is restricted.
Watch without changing the scene
Use binoculars or a camera zoom, stay on public paths and leave feeding, resting and nesting birds enough room to continue normal behavior. If a bird stops feeding, stands alert, calls repeatedly or moves away because of you, increase the distance.
