Quick identification
Piping plover (Charadrius melodus) is a Important winter visitor and passage migrant around South Padre and the Lower Laguna Madre. A small, pale sand-colored plover with orange legs, a short bill and a single narrow breast band that may be faint in winter.

Gulf beach, washover, tidal flats and the broad wind-tidal margins of Laguna Madre.
Where to look
The undeveloped north end and bayside flats are key settings. Use optics and stay out of resting flocks and marked conservation areas. Sightings are possibilities rather than appointments; tide, wind, fronts, water level and human activity can change what uses a site.
What the bird is doing
Wintering birds repeatedly use small feeding territories. Even a quiet approach can force them to spend energy relocating, so let the bird remain settled.
Watch without changing the scene
Use binoculars or a camera zoom, stay on public paths and leave feeding, resting and nesting birds enough room to continue normal behavior. If a bird stops feeding, stands alert, calls repeatedly or moves away because of you, increase the distance.
