Two research-grade island records, one of them dead on the road at the far south end on 29 June 2021, and 156 in the county [S2, S6, S15]. A slim, striped, semi-aquatic snake, most individuals about a meter long, dark above with light side stripes and paired pale spots on the crown; frogs and other amphibians make up 80 to 92 percent of its diet, so it is never far from water. The Gulf Coast subspecies ranges from coastal Louisiana to northeastern Tamaulipas .
