Duran found eight museum specimens from North Padre, six from Mustang and one from South Padre Island; the island held two research-grade records on 2026-09-02, one of them a road kill on 23 April 2021 near the north end of town [S1, S2, S15]. A smooth, shiny, pale beige or gray snake with dark-edged brown blotches and a pale belly, 75 to 130 cm on average; its lower jaw is countersunk to keep sand out while burrowing. It is active at night and dusk from about April to September, prefers sandy or loamy open ground, and eats mainly lizards and small mammals .
