A drive-on entrance, not a serviced park
Cameron County Beach Access #6 is north of Andy Bowie Park on State Park Road 100. It belongs to the county numbering system and is different from the Town of South Padre Island’s walk-on Access #6 at Seaside Circle.
Cameron County’s FY2024 Park System report identifies County Access #6 as a point where vehicles may enter the beach and describes common uses including day use, surf fishing, and nature activities. The Town of South Padre Island’s county-access overview lists no amenities at #6. Plan for no restroom, shower, shade, drinking water, paved beach parking, or staffed visitor building unless Cameron County publishes a current update.
What is the beach drive like?
At #6, the access road only gets you to the beach; the beach surface becomes the driving route and parking area. High water reduces usable sand, and soft or rutted sections can appear after wind, rain, tides, and heavy traffic. Cameron County temporarily closed #6 during a high-tide event on March 16, 2026 because the beach was undriveable, then reopened it the next morning. That episode is not a current closure notice—it is a useful example of how quickly access can change.
Check beach conditions and county notices shortly before leaving. Use a vehicle and recovery plan suited to the conditions, keep a generous distance from the water and dunes, and leave an exit route that does not depend on the tide staying where it is.
Entry fees and beach-driving rules
The city lists County Accesses #5 and #6 as vehicle entrances with an entry fee. Before you go, ask Cameron County Parks & Recreation about the current charge, when it's collected, payment methods, hours and re-entry. The county pages linked here don't give a current fee for #6, so we haven't repeated an old price.
Read driving on the beach before setting out. Stay in the established driving area, keep off dunes and vegetation, and leave plenty of room for people, wildlife, fishing lines and parked vehicles. Thinking of staying overnight? Ask the county first; a day-use entrance doesn't automatically allow camping.
